Cheryl W. Thompson Faculty Member

Since last June, I have worked on an investigation for The Washington Post on DC charter schools. The story has been edited and is awaiting publication. I was elected president--the first black to hold the position--of Investigative Reporters and Editors, a 6,000-member organization of investigative journalists. I have traveled the U.S. (Massachusetts, California, Florida, Illinois, Oregon and New York), and South Africa, Hungary and Poland, representing SMPA by speaking at national and international journalism conferences and workshops. I also serve on an advisory committee to Medill School of Journalism to help strengthen its investigative reporting program and the Fund for Investigative Journalism, which reviews investigative reporting proposals from around the world and doles out grants for them to freelancers. I judged and screened two journalism contests: the Alaska Press Club and the IRE national contest. I guest lectured in March at the University of Maryland Merrill School of Journalism, and presented at various journalism workshops. Even though I am on leave from GW while I do investigative reporting for NPR, I continue to stay connected to SMPA and its students: I worked with GW ABJ students to pull off an amazing event in March "A Conversation with April Ryan." I nominated the student chapter for a national award--Student Journalism Chapter of the Year--and learned earlier this month that they are one of five finalists from dozens of chapters around the country. I also continue to advise students and write letters of recommendations to help them land internships and other jobs after graduation.
