My research focuses on the cognitive characteristics and development of imitation, a fundamental and potentially unique form of learning in humans. To that end, my work has explored (a) whether imitation is mediated by a single mechanism predicting imitation performance across tasks or by different imitation mechanisms that are task and content-specific; (b) How the development of imitation mechanisms is affected by broader changes in cognitive development (e.g., learning and memory); (c) Whether Autism Spectrum Disorders is characterized by imitation-specific deficits in particular domains; (d) How imitation is organized and represented in the brain; And (e) how the imitation performance of other non-human primates--great apes and monkeys--is like/unlike that of human children.
