William R. Stromsem Faculty Member

I am an attorney and CPA with many years of practice in the areas listed. The tax law is constantly changing, requiring a great deal of work to keep up. I read tax news daily and participate on the Texas Society of CPAs Tax Legislation and Policy Committee to be in touch with top professionals on cutting edge developments. I regularly contribute newsletter and blog articles to Texas Society blog and newsletter, and although these are often brief, they require an understanding of how the current development will affect practitioners. I report and discuss current tax developments in my classes and include recent developments in my PowerPoints. PowerPoints and exams are updated annually for tax law changes. I write and teach in the areas listed in this section. I also have worked for many years in providing tax return preparation services to low-income families through VITA tax clinics. This year I spent a great deal of time trying to get a clinic lined up for GW after a year off for COVID. I worked with GWSB grants experts and with the IRS to develop a 30-page application for a $30,000 grant to purchase computers and printers and to employ senior return reviewers that we lacked because we had not developed our own in the normal progression from year to year because of not having a clinic in 2021 and only a part-year clinic in 2020. Ultimately, we did not receive a grant, but I learned about the IRS grant review and will be better prepared to apply for a grant for the 2023 season. When the Omicron variant spread, and GW closed buildings to visitors, we could not have an on-campus VITA clinic. I worked with the IRS to come up with alternatives, such as virtual taxpayer meetings, off campus sites at libraries, and drive-through return preparations. However, none of these would work because of the need for outside volunteers to work as supervisors who could not come into classroom buildings. I worked with Beta Alpha Psi to maintain our active status through the pandemic when meetings and activities had to be virtual, and we received a $1,000 award for a student competition in 2021.
