Frank W. Sesno Faculty Member

Frank Sesno is an Emmy Award-winning journalist, interviewer, media expert and political observer who has served as director the The George Washington University’s School of Media and Public Affairs since 2009. He is the creator and principal investigator of Planet Forward, an interdisciplinary, multi-media platform for student storytelling focused on sustainability, science, and climate change. His passion for journalistic accuracy was the catalyst for his chapter in "Truth Counts" examining how citizens and media companies can resist the scourge of disinformation and false news. Inspired by his experience as a television and radio interviewer, Sesno is author of Ask More: The Power of Questions to Open Doors, Uncover Solutions and Spark Change (Amacom, 2017). At GW, Sesno teaches Multimedia Sustainability Reporting; The Art of the Interview; Art and Genre of Documentary; Journalism Ethics. In his capacity as Director of George Washington University’s School of Media and Public Affairs, Sesno leads a faculty of two dozen world-class scholars and practitioners who research and teach journalism, political communication and the impact of digital media in international affairs. Sesno is an internationally recognized journalist with more than 30 years of experience reporting from around the world. Well known as a CNN anchor, White House Correspondent, talk show host and bureau chief, he is also a nationally renowned interviewer and moderator, who has engaged some of the world’s leading personalities. Sesno hosts the Hospice Foundation of America's "Living with Grief" series. He also hosts Maryland Public Television's annual Chesapeake Bay Summit. He provided the narration for the four-hour documentary on Barack Obama's presidency, "The Limits of Hope." The program appeared on Aljazeera America and National Geographic television. Sesno's work with Planet Forward brings students and experts together around the storytelling of sustainability to explore innovations and new ideas that can "move the planet forward." The 2019 Planet Forward Storyfest Awards were awarded at the Planet Forward Summit at GW in April 2019 will take students on a "storytelling expedition" to the Galapagos in August 2019. In June 2018, Sesno led the winners on a 'storytelling expedition' to Alaska. In 2012, Sesno launched FacetheFactsUSA.org, a nonpartisan content hub dedicated to highlighting factual information during that election cycle. Both Planet Forward andFace the Facts are produced by GW’s Center for Innovative Media, of which Sesno is co-director. Sesno has interviewed five U.S. Presidents - George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter; politicians such as Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Lindsay Graham, and Mitch McConnell; world leaders including Benyamin Netanyahu, Margaret Thatcher, King Hussein, and Yasser Arafat; and major personalities ranging from Bill Gates and Carlos Slim to Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Angelina Jolie.
