Prof. Samaniego joined GWU in 2001 after completing his PhD in Economics at the University of Pennsylvania and his BA in Economics at Princeton University. His research on the sources of economic growth and the impact of regulation on economic growth has appeared in top Economics journals such as the American Economic Review and the Journal of Monetary Economics. He was promoted to Full Professor in 2014. He teaches Principles of Macroeconomics, Financial Economics (undergraduate) and Macroeconomics III (PhD) to over 500 students per year, and actively mentors the teaching assistants and PhD candidates he works with. Since 2017 he has also been Director of Graduate Studies in the Economics Department, reviewing PhD admissions, allocating funding and assigning teaching assistants in conjunction with the PhD Committee, among other duties. He is currently interested in structural transformation, education and leadership/entrepreneurship, and presents on these subjects around the globe.
