Rebecca Marie Lynch Faculty Member

I am an immunologist and virologist whose work focuses on the interactions between virus and antibody during early infection with an emphasis on development and ontogeny of virus-specific antibody lineages. My training focused on antibody and virus lineage development in individuals who develop broadly neutralizing antibody responses against HIV-1. My independent laboratory investigates early antibody responses to HIV-1 infection and vaccination and how these responses are affected by the microbiome. Currently we are measuring antibody responses against diverse bacteria strains after treatment with probiotics. We also study how HIV-1 escapes from broadly neutralizing antibodies, and how to use this information to inform cure strategies. This year we analyzed the genetic diversity of the HIV env gene in reactivated reservoir virus samples and measured how this affected bNAb sensitivity. These studies will inform personalized HIV-1 treatment as well as cure strategies involving bNAbs. We also study memory responses to Zika infection, and are writing a manuscript following up on the differences in antibody memory responses in people who did or did not develop GBS after Zika infection. This year we also pivoted to focus on the novel SARS-CoV-2 and antibody responses to this virus. We are participating in isolating samples from people with COVID for the GW COVID specimen bank. We are currently collaborating with doctors from the MFA to analyze antibody responses in people with long COVID symptoms post infection and in people with antibody deficiencies after they are vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2.
