Patricia F. Phalen Faculty Member

Patricia Phalen is Associate Professor and Assistant Director in the School of Media & Public Affairs (SMPA) at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. She has served as Associate and Assistant Director of SMPA as well as SMPA’s Director of Graduate Studies. In the fall of 2011 she was the Hamrin Visiting Professor in the Media Management and Transformation Centre at Jönköping University in Sweden. She has been invited to speak about her research in Spain, Mexico, Sweden and, most recently, South Korea. Dr. Phalen has a Masters and PhD in Radio/Television/Film from Northwestern University, and a BA and MBA from Boston College. Her research focuses on the socio-economics of mass media organizations, particularly the relationships within media firms and between media production and audiences. Her book, “Writing Hollywood: The Work and Professional Culture of Television Writers” was published in 2018. She is also co-author of two books, The Mass Audience: Rediscovering the Dominant Model, and Ratings Analysis: The Theory and Practice of Audience Research (now in its 4th edition). She has published in academic journals such as The Journal of Media Economics, The Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, Telecommunications Policy, The Journal of Popular Culture, The International Journal on Media Management, Political Communication and The Journal of Radio Studies, among others. The graduate and undergraduate courses she has taught at GWU include “Hollywood & Politics,” “Media Organizations & Audiences,” “Audience Research,” “Media in a Free Society,” and “Institutions and Processes of Mass Media.” In 2018 she won the Barry Sherman Teaching Award from AEJMC's Division of Media Management, Economics and Entrepreneurship.
