Shawn Frederick McHale Faculty Member

Positions

I am a historian of Southeast Asia (PhD, Cornell) with a deep interest in the study of international affairs as well. I have published widely in Vietnamese history, my area of specialty, but I have broad interests in the study of Southeast Asia, colonialism and decolonization, and print culture. I have published in English and in French, and carry out research in the English, French, and Vietnamese languages. I have just finished a book on the end of empire in French Indochina called "Fractures of Empire: Violence and Sovereignty in a Mekong delta at war, 1945-1954." I have just started. a new research project on Vietnamese Buddhism in the modern era. I speak French and Vietnamese.
