Dr. Birkmeier is an Assistant Professor and the Director of Clinical Education (DCE) in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program in the Department of Health, Human Function, and Rehabilitation Sciences at The George Washington University (GW). She received her Master in Physical Therapy in January 2001 and then her Transitional DPT in May of 2005, both from Saint Louis University in Saint Louis, Missouri. She became a Pediatric Certified Specialist in 2009 and currently practices at Children’s National Health System in Washington, DC. Her current practice includes the acute and outpatient care of children with a history of prematurity, neuromotor dysfunction, and lower extremity biomechanical alignment issues.
Dr. Birkmeier is the course director of the Pediatrics course, along with other integrative courses in the GW DPT Program. In addition to her role as DCE, she is an APTA Level 1 and 2 Credentialed Clinical Trainer. She remains an active member in the regional clinical education consortium, the Mid-Atlantic Consortium of Clinical Education. She currently is an APTA Pediatric, Acute Care, and Education Physical Therapy Academy member and is active in a variety of special interest groups in the academies. She also has multiple peer reviewed publications focused on the scholarship of teaching and learning and presents nationally and internationally on topics pertaining to pediatric rehabilitation and educational strategies within the classroom and clinic.
