Marie E. Matta Faculty Member


Marie E. Matta, Ph.D., is an Associate Industry Professor of Decision Sciences in the School of Business at The George Washington University (GWU). She teaches operations management and supply chain management courses to undergraduate and graduate students at GWU. Dr. Matta earned her Ph.D. in the Business Administration doctoral program at Duke University, specializing in Operations Management and received a B.S. from Dickinson College with a triple major in mathematics, economics, and policy & management studies. In 2016, she obtained an Advanced Professional Certificate in Sustainable Supply Chains through the University of San Francisco. In 2019, she earned a Master Certificate in Business Analytics from Michigan State University. And, more recently, she completed two courses in Business Intelligence at Villanova University in 2020-2021. Her research focuses on solving complex flowshop scheduling problems frequently found in service settings. She has developed large-scale mathematical models and novel algorithms for several multi-facility environments, such as, an oncology center, a diagnostic testing center, and a mail services center. Her methods of analysis involve a combination of discrete-event simulation, integer programming, heuristic programming, and genetic algorithm techniques. Prior to joining the faculty at GWU, Dr. Matta worked in management consulting for several years at William M. Mercer, Inc., Systems Research & Applications International, and IBM where she built applied mathematical models for clients as diverse as the Department of Defense, an intelligence agency, several leading hospitals, and the American Red Cross. She has consulted and provided executive education to many organizations and health-care clients. Dr. Matta was featured in the 2006 GWU Cherry Tree Yearbook as one of the “exemplary and inspiring educators” who comprise The George Washington University. She served as the 2007-2008 Faculty Guide to the Business and Entrepreneurial House in their charter year serving over 150 students and as a Faculty Advisor to two of the undergraduate Living and Learning Cohorts (LLCs). Dr. Matta was also the recipient of the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REUs) Dean’s Scholar Program in 2006 and was awarded the Outstanding AMBA Faculty Award in 2007. In May 2009, Dr. Matta received the highest honor at the GWU School of Business when she was bestowed with the Teaching Excellence Award. In May 2011, Dr. Matta received the prestigious university-wide Morton A. Bender Award for her extensive use of technology in teaching and was presented with the Outstanding Professional MBA Core Faculty Award by the Class of 2011. More recently, she received the Student Choice Award for Best Faculty Teaching for the Online Master of Business Administration program by the graduate students in the Class of 2017 and was also selected by GWU’s undergraduate student athletes as “The GWU Student Athlete Professor of the Year” in 2017. She is affiliated with The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), INFORMS Women in Operations Research/Management Science (WORMS), Decision Sciences Institute (DSI), The Production and Operations Management Society (POMS), The Association for Operations Management—APICS (Advancing Productivity, Innovation, & Competitive Success), The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP), the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transportation (CILT).
