Joan Eleanor Kester Faculty Member

Positions

Dr. Joan Kester is the Program Director of GW’s Interdisciplinary Secondary Transition Program and she prepares secondary transition leaders from across the country through an online master’s and certificate program that includes a specialization in autism and brain injury. Dr. Kester has 30+ years of experience in workforce transitions and building university-business-government partnerships to inform policy change. She is the PI for the Transition Quality Indicator Project, which will produce a process for measuring comparative secondary transition successes of various educational entities. The Transition Discoveries Implementation Model is now being implemented in over 30 Local Education Agencies in PA, with a commitment from the PA Bureau of Special Education to scale this model up statewide. Dr. Kester’s research interests include secondary transition, digital literacy of youth with disabilities, interdisciplinary professional development needs, and school improvement. With a Doctor of Education in human and organizational learning, she is an expert in knowledge management with specific skills in engaging stakeholders to solve complex educational issues. Dr. Kester receives national recognition for her work in the successful transition of youth with disabilities from school to adult life.
