Matthew S. Hindman Faculty Member

Positions

Matthew Hindman is an associate professor of media and public affairs at GWU's School of Media and Public Affairs. His research focuses on political communication, Internet politics, and the attention economy.

Prof. Hindman is the author of the multi-award-winning book The Internet Trap (Princeton University Press 2018), which argues that our misunderstanding of digital audiences has warped public policy and accelerated the decline of local news. His previous book The Myth of Digital Democracy (Princeton University Press) also won multiple academic awards.

In addition to the new book, Prof. Hindman has written about big data, online targeting, and digital disinformation. Several of his new research projects focus on the spread of fake and conspiracy news on social media. He lives in Washington, DC.
