Matthew S. Hindman Faculty Member

Positions

Matthew Hindman is Professor of Media and Public affairs at The George Washington University, and he leads the digital investigations research cluster at GW's Institute for Data, Democracy and Politics. His research focuses on political communication, Internet politics, and the attention economy.

Prof. Hindman is the author of the multi-award-winning book The Internet Trap (Princeton University Press 2018), which argues that our misunderstanding of digital audiences has warped public policy and accelerated the decline of local news. His previous book The Myth of Digital Democracy (Princeton University Press) also won multiple academic awards. His writings has appeared in The Atlantic, The Washington Post, and The New York Times among other outlets.

In addition to his books, Prof. Hindman has written about big data, digital disinformation, and the power of technology firms. He lives in Washington, DC.
