Positions

I am a Developmental Psychologist, focused on understanding the impact of temperament, genetic makeup, and community influences on the emergence of psychopathology and health problems. Since 2000, I have incorporated Behavioral Genetic research methods as a means of differentiating person- and environmentally-based influences on development, and exploring the role of gene-environment interplay in development. I have been involved in several large scale, federally-funded projects that utilize Behavioral Genetic methods to understand genetic and environmental contributions to behavior, mental health, relationships and obesity during early childhood, adolescence and adulthood. These studies include: (1) the Twin Offspring Study in Sweden (TOSS, R01-MH/HD54610, PI Neiderhiser); (2) the Nonshared Environment in Adolescent Development project (NEAD, R01- MH R01-43373, PI Reiss); (3) the Early Growth and Development Study (EGDS, R01-DA020585; PIs Neiderhiser, Leve, Reiss; R01-DK090264, PI Ganiban); and (4) the Boston University Twin Project (BUTP, R01HD068435, PI Saudino). Most recently, I have started to examine the impact of structural racism on children well-being within the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) initiative (UG3/UH3-OD0233389, MPIs Ganiban, Leve, Neiderhiser). I also value teaching and mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students. Since joining the GWU faculty, I have taught entry level undergraduate classes (Introduction to Psychology, Developmental Psychology), and upper level undergraduate (Developmental Psychopathology) and graduate seminars (Lifespan Developmental Psychopathology I; Theories of Developmental Psychology). I have also mentored numerous students at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
