Ellen Costello, PT, PhD, is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Health, Human Function and Rehabilitation Sciences in the School of Medicine & Health Sciences. She earned a BS in physical therapy at Ithaca College (1982), MS in Anatomy from New York Medical College (1986), and PhD in Clinical Research at New York University (1999). She has been a member of the George Washington University physical therapy faculty since 2004 holding positions of Chair/Co-Chair of Admissions (2006-present), Associate Program Director (2011-2017), and Program Director (2018-present). She has held positions on a variety of Program, Departmental, School and University committees, most notably Health Sciences Appointment, Tenure and Promotion Committee and the University Faculty Senate and Executive Committee. Dr. Costello has held faculty positions in entry-level physical therapist programs at Ithaca College (@AECOM) and Columbia University prior to her tenure at GW. Her primary areas of teaching responsibility include gross anatomy and management of individuals with cardiovascular and pulmonary dysfunction. She has practiced in a variety of settings including a large city hospital Burn and Trauma Center, an Oncology Specialty Hospital and Home Care. She has received a number of teaching excellence awards at GW and other institutions.
With grant support from a variety of funding sources, Dr. Costello has worked collaboratively on topics that range from outcomes in physical therapist education to physical activity and aging in the older population and acute care physical therapy practice. She has published and presented her research in both peer-reviewed journals and National and International Research Forums. Dr. Costello is a member of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary, Education, Acute Care and Geriatrics Sections of the APTA. She is President of the Anatomy Educator Special Interest Group for the APTA Education Academy. She is currently an on-site reviewer for CAPTE, the accrediting body of the APTA.
