David Michaels Faculty Member

The following is a short summary of my key achievements and recent work. Additional information can be found in my CV, attached. Research • Scientific Integrity. I have written extensively on the work of polluters and manufacturers of dangerous products to manufacture uncertainty about the hazardous properties of their products. My writings have had a very positive impact in this area and I have received several awards for this work. • Improving workplace safety and health. I continue to focus on ways to improve our system of worker protections, and explore the relationship of safety and health management and operational excellence. However, COVID-19 has been a massive worker safety crisis, so much of my work in the last year has focused on attempting to develop policies that prevent worker exposure to SARS-CoV-2. Teaching. In the years covered by this report I served as course director for Protecting Public Health and the Environment: Policies, Politics, and Programs (PubH 6122) I serve as Vice-Chair of the EOH Department for Education Service: I have served in two sub-cabinet federal public health positions: o Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health (2009-2017) o Assistant Secretary of Energy for Environment, Safety and Health (1998-2001). I now am a member of numerous Boards, Committees, and expert panels that are helping to improve the public's health and environment.
