John Barton Gillum

Dr. J. Barton Gillum is Program Director and Assistant Professor for the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-medicine Program within the Department of PA Studies. In this role, he oversees recruitment and retention of students, develops linkages with medical schools and PA programs, oversees curriculum and faculty as well as advises students within the program.
Dr. Gillum completed his undergraduate degree at Baylor University, PA degree at University of South Alabama and his clinical doctorate degree from Baylor University. He is a decorated Army veteran, who deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom and served as a PA in primary care and emergency medicine. He also served as adjunct faculty at Baylor University for the Army/Baylor Clinical Doctorate Program in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Gillum serves as the course director for Current Topics in Healthcare and Medical Terminology at the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-medicine program and Clinical Specialties for the PA program. He also serves as a facilitator for Integration I & II for the PA didactic curriculum.
Dr. Gillum’s research interests includes point of care ultrasound and pre-PA and pre-medical education. He serves as a peer review for the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and Clinician Reviews. In the past, he has been an ACLS, PALS and BLS course instructor for the American Red Cross.
Dr. Gillum is the Co-Chair of the advisory committee that oversees the centralized application service for post-baccalaurate programs (PostbacCAS). He has served as a diversity representative on several faculty search committees as well as the PA Studies chair search committee in 2021. He continues to be an active volunteer for the Virginia Medical Reserves and is the regional director of the Virginia Academy of Physician Assistants.
