Anu Phene is Professor of International Business and Phillip Grub Distinguished Scholar at the School of Business at George Washington University (GW). Before joining GW, she was an Associate Professor of Strategy at the University of Utah. She received her Ph.D. in international management from the University of Texas and her MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. Prior to her doctoral studies, she worked for American Express Bank in the treasury department.
Her research focuses on innovation and global strategy. She has examined the role played by different entities, ranging from multinational corporations (MNCs), their subsidiaries and inventors, to intergovernmental organizations; and their deployment of different mechanisms such as alliances and acquisitions, in enabling cross-border knowledge transfers and facilitating innovation in the international arena. Her research has been published in the Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of International Business Studies, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Economic Geography, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Management, Global Strategy Journal and Management International Review
She is Associate Editor at Global Strategy Journal, Consulting Editor at the Journal of International Business Studies, on the editorial board of Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal and a Fellow of the Academy of International Business. She has received several awards for reviewing including Best Reviewer at Organization Science, Journal of International Business Studies, Strategic Management Society, AOM and AIB. She also served on the Executive Committee of the International Management Division at the Academy of Management, and in various capacities at the Academy of International Business and Strategic Management Society, including as Track Chair and Chair/Member of the Buckley and Casson, and the Farmer Dissertation Award Committees
She teaches courses in international strategy and has received several teaching awards including the Student Choice (PMBA Faculty) Award, the Undergraduate Teaching Award, the Teaching Excellence Award, all at the School of Business at GW, the Trachtenberg Prize for Teaching Excellence, a University teaching award at GW, and the Brady Superior Teaching Award at the University of Utah.
